Question of the Day...

In the wake of the Patriots win in Super Bowl XXXIX, one big question is being tossed around:

Is Bill Bellichick the greatest coach in the history of the NFL?

I'll post my thoughts on this later today. For now, do our readers have any ideas?

Bellichick is good, I'll grant that. One could even provide a strong argument for being the best...he just passed Lombardi for the best post-season record. I find it hard to narrow it down.

Chuck Noll still has one more Superbowl win (4). Bill Parcells is good...Bellichick coached under him. Washington's Joe Gibbs and (former)San Francisco coach Bill Walsh both won 3 Super Bowls.

My point is it depends on so many other factors that just one head coach I would find it hard to label one person the greatest of all time.

the competition was tougher in Lombardi's time...i'm a Parcells fan, but probably because we went to the same high school...

Give him a few years. He's definitely in the mix right now, but he's still one Super Bowl win behind Noll and he's tied with Gibbs and Walsh.

Let Bill win another Super Bowl or two, and I'll consider him the best.

If the Pats win the Super Bowl next season, they might as well induct him into the Hall that night. Four out of five would be hard to argue with.

As stated above, it depends. I'm not entirely sure, given free agency and other salary structures, that the competition was tougher during Lombardi's era. Other than the Pats, the league is pretty level at the moment. That argues in Bellichick's favor. However, in terms of who transformed the league more, Walsh may have a pretty good argument. On that score, though, I'm less familiar with Lombardi's record. Was he as transformative as Walsh?

Here's an idea:

The Patriots should hire Norm Chow to replace Charlie Weiss. They'd never lose another game, and Bellichick would have three or four more Super Bowl victories to add to his resume.

If I'm Bellichik that's the first man I call.

10-1 in playoffs is better than Lombardi (and all others). I don't think the numbers lie in this case.

Keep of the good work!
